Russian-English Parallel Text

This is a parallel translation of the Russian Children's Book 'The Jolly Family' by Nikolai Nosov. On one side you have the Russian original, on the other an English translation. I put this page together to help a Russian girlfriend learn English for free. I think Russian to English translation exercises, or English to Russian translation exercises, are the ultimate way to learn. I created this page because the few examples I found on the internet were too complicated for beginners.

Sorry I got bored after pasting the first chapter to this web page but if lots of people write to me I might finish it :-)

Important Decision

This happened when the steam-engine, which Mishka and I had tried to make out of a tin can, blew up. Mishka let the water in the can get too hot and it burst and the steam burnt his hand. Lucky for him his mother smeared some naphtha ointment on it right away. That's a wonderful remedy. Try it yourself if you don't believe me. But be sure to rub it on as soon as you burn yourself, or else the skin will come off. то случилось после того, как взорвалась паровая машина, которую мы с Мишкой делали из консервной банки. Мишка слишком сильно нагрел воду, банка лопнула, и горячим паром ему обожгло руку. Хорошо, что Мишкина мама тут же намазала ему руку нафталановой мазью. Это очень хорошее средство. Кто не верит, пусть сам попробует. Только мазать нужно сейчас же, как обожжёшься, пока не сошла кожа.
Well, after our steam-engine blew up, Mishka's mother wouldn't let us play with it any more and threw it into the dust-bin. For a while we couldn't think of anything to do and it was awfully dull. It was the beginning of spring. The snow was melting everywhere. The water ran in little streams in the gutters. The bright spring sun shone in through the windows. But Mishka and I were in the dumps. We are a funny pair—we aren't happy unless we've got something to do. And when we haven't anything to do we sit around and mope and mope until we find something. После того как машина лопнула, Мишкина мама запретила нам с ней возиться и выбросила её в мусорный ящик. Пришлось нам некоторое время слоняться без дела. Скука была смертельная. Началась весна. Снег таял повсюду. По улицам журчали ручьи. Солнышко уже по-весеннему светило в окна. Но ничто нас не радовало. Такой уж у нас с Мишкой характер - нам обязательно нужно какое-нибудь занятие. Когда нечего делать, мы начинаем скучать и скучаем до тех пор, пока не находим какого-нибудь дела.
One day I came to see Mishka .and found him sitting at the table poring over a book, with his head in his hands. He was so busy reading he didn't hear me come in. I had to bang the door hard before he looked up. Один раз я прихожу к Мишке, а он сидит за столом, носом уткнулся в какую-то книгу, голову обхватил руками и ничего на свете, кроме этой книги, не видит и даже не замечает, что я пришёл. Я нарочно хлопнул погромче дверью, чтобы он обратил на меня внимание.
"Oh, it's you, Nikoladze," he said with a broad grin. - А, это ты, Николадзе! - обрадовался Мишка.
Mishka never calls me by my real name. Instead of calling me Kolya like everyone else, he invents all sorts of queer names for me such as Nikola, Mikola, Mikula Selyaninovich, or Miklukha-Maklai, and once he even called me Nikolaki. Every day I have to answer to a new name. But I don't mind so long as he likes it.

Вместо того чтобы сказать просто “Коля”, он называет меня то Никола, то Микола, то Микула Селянинович, то Миклухо-Маклай, а один раз даже стал называть по-гречески - Николаки. Словом, что ни день, то новое имя. Но я не обижаюсь. Пусть себе зовёт, если ему так нравится.
"Yes," I said, "it's me. What's that book you've got there?" - Да, это я, - говорю я. - А что это у тебя за книжка? Чего ты в неё вцепился, как клещ?
"A very interesting book," said Mishka, "I bought it this morning at a news-stand." - Очень интересная книга, - говорит Мишка. - Я её сегодня утром в газетном киоске купил.
I glanced at it. The title was Poultry Farming. There was a picture of a hen and a cock on the cover, and on every page there were diagrams and drawings and pictures of chicken coops. Я посмотрел: на обложке - петух и курица и написано “Птицеводство”, а на каждой странице - какие-то курятники и чертежи.
"What's interesting about it?" I said. "Looks to me like a scientific book of some kind." - Что же тут интересного? - говорю я. - Это какая-то научная книжка.
"That's what makes it interesting. This isn't one of your silly fairytales. Everything in here is true. It's a useful book, that's what it is." - Вот и хорошо, что научная. Это тебе не какие-нибудь сказки. Тут всё правда. Это полезная книга.
Mishka is the kind of chap who insists on everything being useful. Whenever he has a little pocket money he goes and buys something useful like this book. Once he bought a book called Chebyshev's Inverse Trigonometric Functions and Polynomes. Of course he couldn't understand a word, so he decided to put it away until he was clever enough to read it. It's been lying on the shelf ever since, waiting for Mishka to get clever. Мишка такой человек - ему обязательно надо, чтоб от всего была польза. Когда у него бывают лишние деньги, он идёт в магазин и покупает какую-нибудь полезную книжку. Один раз он купил книгу, которая называется “Обратные тригонометрические функции и полиномы Чебышева”. Конечно, он ни слова в этой книжке не понял и решил прочитать её потом, когда немножко поумнеет. С тех пор эта книга лежит у него на полке - ждёт, когда он поумнеет.
He marked the page he was reading and closed the book. Мишка отметил страницу, на которой читал, и закрыл книжку.
"You can learn all sorts of things from this book," he said. "How to raise chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, everything." - Тут, брат, про всё есть, - сказал он, - как разводить кур, уток, гусей, индюков.
"You're not thinking of raising turkeys by any chance?" - Уж не собираешься ли ты разводить индюков? - спросил я.
"No, but I like to read about it just the same. It turns out you can make a machine called an incubator that hatches chickens all by itself without any hen." - Нет, что ты! Просто интересно почитать про это. Оказывается, можно устроить такую машину - инкубатор, и цыплята сами будут выводиться, без курицы.
"Ha!" I said. "Everybody knows that. What's more, I've seen one last year, when I was on the farm with Mother. It hatched five hundred or even a thousand chicks a day. They hardly had time to take them out." - Кто же этого не знает! - говорю я. - В прошлом году я был с мамой в колхозе и видел инкубатор. Там цыплята выводились каждый день штук по пятьсот или по тысяче. Их насилу успевали вынимать из инкубатора.
"Really!" said Mishka all excited. "I never knew about that. I thought only brood-hens could hatch chicks. I used to see lots of sitting-hens when we lived in the country." - Что ты говоришь! - удивился Мишка. - А я раньше не знал об этом. Я думал, что цыплят всегда высиживает курица. Когда мы жили в деревне, я видел, как наседка высиживает цыплят.
"Oh, I've seen plenty of them myself," I said.' "But an incubator is much better. A hen can only hatch a dozen eggs at a time, but an incubator can take a thousand at a time." - Я тоже видел наседку. Но инкубатор гораздо лучше. Под наседку положишь десяток яиц - и всё, а в инкубатор можно заложить сразу тысячу.
"I know," said Mishka. "That's what it says in the book. And here's another thing. A hen doesn't lay eggs when she's hatching her chicks and bringing them up, but if you have an incubator to hatch the chicks the hen can go on laying eggs." - Я знаю, - говорит Мишка. - Здесь про это написано. И потом, пока курица сидит на яйцах и воспитывает цыплят, она не несёт яиц, а если цыплят высиживает инкубатор, курица всё время несётся, и яиц получается гораздо больше.
We set to work to figure out how many more eggs there would be if all the hens laid eggs instead of hatching chickens. It takes twenty-one days for a brood-hen to hatch chickens, and if you count the time she spends looking after them when they're hatched you find that it takes about three months before she starts laying again. Мы стали высчитывать, сколько лишних яиц получится, если все куры не станут высиживать цыплят, а вместо этого будут нести яйца. Оказалось, что курица высиживает цыплят двадцать один день, потом она выращивает маленьких цыплят, так что пройдёт три месяца, прежде чем она снова начнёт нестись.
"Three months, that's ninety days," said Mishka. "If the hen wasn't busy hatching chickens she could lay ninety eggs more a year, even if she only laid one egg a day. For a small farm with even ten hens that would make nine hundred eggs a year. And if you take some big collective or state farm with a thousand hens, you'd have ninety thousand extra eggs. Think of it! Ninety thousand eggs!" - Три месяца - это девяносто дней, - сказал Мишка. - Если бы курица не высиживала цыплят, она смогла бы снести за год на девяносто яиц больше. В каком-нибудь маленьком хозяйстве, где всего десять кур, за год получилось бы на девятьсот яиц больше. А если взять такое хозяйство, как колхоз или совхоз, где на птицеферме тысяча кур, то там получится на девяносто тысяч больше яиц. Подумать только - на девяносто тысяч!
We spent quite a long time discussing the usefulness of incubators. Мы долго рассуждали о том, какая польза получается от инкубатора. Потом Мишка сказал:
Then Mishka said: "I say, let's make a small incubator of our own and hatch a few eggs." - А что, если нам самим сделать маленький инкубатор, чтоб в нём вывелись из яиц цыплята?
"How could we do that?" I asked. "I'm sure it isn't an easy thing to make." - Как же мы это сделаем? - говорю я. - Ведь всё надо знать, как делать.
"I don't think it's so hard," said Mishka. "The book tells you all about it. The main thing is to keep the eggs warm for twenty-one days funning and then the chickens will hatch out by themselves." - Ничего хитрого нет, - говорит Мишка. - В книжке тут всё написано. Главное, чтобы яйца нагревались ровно двадцать один день подряд, и тогда из них выведутся цыплята.
Now, the thought of having little chicks of our own appealed to me tremendously. I am very fond of all kinds of birds and animals. Mishka and I joined the Young Naturalists' circle at school last autumn and worked a. little with our pets, but then Mishka got the idea of making a steam-engine and so we stopped going to the circle. Vitya Smirnov, the monitor of the circle, told us he would cross us off the list of members if we didn't do any work, but we begged him to give us another chance. Мне вдруг очень захотелось, чтоб у нас были маленькие цыплята, потому что я очень люблю всяких птиц и зверей. Осенью мы с Мишкой даже записались в кружок юннатов и работали в живом уголке, а потом Мишка придумал делать эту паровую машину, и мы перестали ходить на кружок. Витя Смирнов, который был у нас старостой, сказал, что вычеркнет нас из списка, если мы не будем работать, но мы сказали, что будем, и он не вычеркнул.
Mishka tried to imagine how nice it would be when our chicks hatched out. Мишка принялся рассказывать, как будет хорошо, когда у нас выведутся маленькие цыплята.
"They'll be such sweet little things," he said. "We can fix up a corner for them in the kitchen and they can live there and we'll feed them and take care of them." - Они будут такие хорошенькие! - говорил он. - Можно будет отгородить им угол на кухне, и пусть они там живут, а мы будем кормить их и ухаживать за ними.
"Yes, but we'll have plenty to do before that. Don't forget it takes three weeks for them to hatch out!" I said. - Но ведь придётся три недели возиться, пока они выведутся! - говорю я.
"What about it? All we have to do is to make the incubator, the chicks hatch out by themselves." - Чего возиться? Сделаем инкубатор - они и выведутся. Я задумался.
I thought it over for a while. Mishka looked at me anxiously. I saw that he was itching to get to work at once. Мишка с беспокойством поглядывал на меня. Я видел, что ему очень хочется взяться поскорее за дело.
"All right," I said. "We haven't anything else to do anyhow. Let's have a shot at it." - Ну ладно! - говорю я. - Делать нам всё равно нечего, попробуем.
"I knew you would agree!" Mishka cried joyfully. "I would have tackled it myself, but it wouldn't be half as much fun without you." - Я так и знал, что ты согласишься! - обрадовался Мишка. - Я и сам взялся бы за это дело, да мне без тебя скучно.
